Senate Sends Budget to House and Destroys Kentucky’s Future

“We’re paying our monthly mortgage with our credit card,” said Sen. Julian Carroll, D-Frankfort.

That sentimate is held by several state representatives concerning the Kentucky Budget that was recently sent to the House for approval. The budget adds record debt to Kentucky in a time of financial uncertainty. Our requirements to pay back this debt over the next 20-30yrs will continue to be a burden to our state.

John Hicks, deputy budget director for the Fletcher administration, said the $2.38 billion in added debt is a record amount for a state budget. The previous record was $1.9 billion added by the budget passed last year.

Little nuggets of cost helped to make our debt load greater than ever before. One of which is the ill advised Louisville Downtown Arena. This project alone added over $75million dollars to the budget. Perhaps, you can also enjoy the 150 thousand dollar walking path

Shively will get $142,600 that it sought for a walking path in Shively Park. “For that money, it will be state of the art,” Shively Mayor Sherry Conner said. “It will be asphalt or concrete, with benches and lights.”

Maybe its the labor cost involved in the project but I know concrete and asphalt don’t cost that much. How about a volunteer effort to build the walking path.

When will lawmakers stop borrowing against our future. How many more times do we have buy something we cannot afford. The lawmakers stated that Education took a priority in the budget and a large portion will goto fund educational intiatives. Why not try to not spend money on we dont have on a arena or walking path and spend money we do have on schools, and libraries.

Perhaps everyone in the state can start budgeting their personal homes on the way the state does. I would love to just sell 50 year bonds so I can retire early. You see I would like to spend some time in Florida during the winter months but don’t have the money right now. I will just finance that and have a low monthly payment. No biggie, I won’t have it paid off until I am 70.

The point is IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT DONT BUY IT!

Now if the legislature would just act responsibly and follow that simple rule we would all be better off.
